Vivian (Tewes) Knospe, 93, of Merrill, WI, died peacefully on November 23, 2020, at Pine Crest Nursing Home in Merrill, Wisconsin, where she had resided for the past 5 years. Vivian was born the second of four children to Rudolph and Sarah (Allorie) Tewes of Merrill, on May 25th, 1927.  Growing up with 3 brothers, and no sisters, Viv was a self proclaimed “tom boy”, and learned to, “hold her own,” which she did all her life!  On November 25th, 1945, she married William George Knospe, also of Merrill. He preceded her in death on December 23, 1995.they were married 50 years.  Vivian worked most of her adult life, until she retired from Weinbrenner Shoe Company in Merrill in 1999. Bill and Viv had two sons, George, and a baby that died at birth in 1948. Anyone that knew Viv, knew her to be a no-non-sense, hard working, full steam ahead, wife and mother. In the early years of their marriage, Viv would accompany Bill to “dance jobs” around the state on weekends, where Bill would sing and play the guitar, with his country music band, “The Drifters”.  No matter the hour they returned home; Viv would routinely cook up a big breakfast for everyone to eat. Many tall tales were told at that table!  In later years, during the Vietnam War, while serving in the air force, Viv’s son, George, returned home on leave from Thailand.  Viv got the call while at work. She informed her boss that she was leaving, turned off her machine and marched out the door, and with Bill, went to get their son.  Viv always said that year was the longest and hardest year of her life. Viv was famous for making home made apple pies.  Her mouth-watering pies had a flaky crust that melted in your mouth.  She would bake one at the drop of a hat at anyone’s request. Viv’s two grand daughters were the only people Viv ever taught to make that pie!  In her twilight years, Viv’s great grand child, Casey, was the spark that always put a twinkle in her eyes and a grin on her face.  Viv’s joy was her family.

Survivors include her son, George (Connie) Knospe, Merrill, WI, her grand daughters, Wendy Knospe of Merrill and Linda (Brian) Krueger of Kimberly, WI,  great grandson, Casey Krueger of Kimberly, WI., two brothers, Victor Tewes of Rockford, Illinois and  Maurice (aka: Pat/ Rudy) Tewes of Merrill, nieces and nephews.  Viv was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill, her infant son, and her brother and sister-in-law Calvin (Doris) Tewes of Omaha Nebraska, and sisters-in-law Alice (Maurice) Tewes of Merrill and Rosemary (Victor) Tewes of Rockford, IL.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.   Fr. Mariadas Vallabhaneni will be officiating.  Visitation will be from 9:30 AM to 10:45AM at Waid Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 1, 2020.  Burial will be in Merrill Memorial Park Cemetery.

Special thanks to the staff and care givers at Pine Crest Nursing Home. They have always gone above and beyond expectations in Viv’s care.  The staff had become Viv’s substitute family during these months of quarantine.  It was a blessing to visit with Viv frequently, through ‘face time’, any time we wished. That service was a godsend for our family during this very difficult time. While in hospice, the family were able to visit Viv in person, due to Pine Crests compassionate care policy. We are beyond grateful for this practice.  We would also like to express our appreciation to Dr. Greg Gill, Viv’s care provider. Viv really liked Dr. Gill!  High praise indeed!

Charles R. Phelps (Charlie) age 72, Merrill, Wisconsin, passed away Wednesday, November 18th, 2020 at Aspirus Hospital, Wausau, Wisconsin.  He was born in Merrill on June 10th, 1948, the son of the late Charles L. and Martha (Burgener) Phelps.  Charlie graduated from Merrill High School in 1966 and North Central Technical College in 1968 with an associate degree in accounting.  Charlie married Marsha C. Pawelka on July 24th, 1976 in Greenfield, Wisconsin.  They resided in Merrill while raising their two children, Kristin and Nicholas.  Later moving up to Harrison, Wisconsin to spend 15 years in the home they built on Seven Island Lake.  Previously they enjoyed a cottage on the same land for 25 years where they enjoyed many happy times with family and friends.  They moved back to Merrill in 2018.  Charlie worked as an accountant for Semling-Menke Company, Merrill, from 1971-1999, and then at the Tomahawk Paper Mill for fifteen years until retiring in 2013.  Charlie was an amazing man.  His love for life knew no boundaries.  His purpose in life was to help everyone in any way he could.  Charlie never met a stranger.  He truly wanted to know your story, and always had a joke to build that first connection.  No one has ever loved his family, friends and town more.  Family was everything to Charlie.  Once you were in, you had his unconditional love and support.  You may be gone now, but we look forward to that first joke when we meet again in the eternal log cabin in the sky.  A loving husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend.  He adored his children and grandchildren, and they him.  Charlie was lovingly called “Papa” by some, and “Grandpa Pizza” by others.  Charlie was always working, whether it was at his beloved cabin, or with his son or friends.  To him it wasn’t work, but fun.  Charlie enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and spending time at his cabin.  He also enjoyed spending time in Gulf Shores, Alabama.  He bowled with the same crew for 40+ years at Lincoln Lanes.  Charlie played baseball in his early years, and then enjoyed watching his son play hockey and Little League, and his daughter participate in various sports.  Charlie was very involved with Merrill Hockey, first by watching his son play, and in later years, as the color announcer for high school games on WJMT.  Charlie was chairman of the committee responsible for fundraising to build the Merrill Area Recreation Center (MARC).  He was also involved in numerous community and civic organizations.  He always volunteered and helped out friends, young or old.  Charlie loved his new friendships from his years spent in Harrison and at the Tomahawk Mill.  He was taken from us far too soon, but his spirit will continue to live on in our family’s hearts forever.  Godspeed my love.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Marsha Phelps of 44 years, daughter Kristin (Grant) McLean of Delafield, Wisconsin, son Nicholas (Heather) Phelps of Merrill, three granddaughters, Elizabeth McLean of Delafield, Aurelia and Reegan Phelps of Merrill, and one grandson, James McLean of Delafield.  Mother-in-law, Blanche Pawelka of Greenfield.  Brothers Herbert (Ramona) Hornischer of Merrill and Dan (Mary) Phelps of Oak Brook, Illinois.  Sister Jo Ann Belant of Merrill, sister-in-law, Alvina Hornischer of Merrill, brother-in-law, Mark Pawelka of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and many loving nieces and nephews.  Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law Peter Pawelka of Greenfield, brother Ronald Hornischer, brother-in-law, brother-in-law Jim Belant, both of Merrill, and brother-in-law Rick Pawelka of Austin, Texas.

A private family gathering will be held at the home of son Nicholas Phelps for final prayers.  Burial will be at a later date in Merrill Memorial Cemetery.  No services for the public at this time due to the pandemic, but a celebration of Charlie’s life will be held during the summer of 2021 at his beloved MARC complex for his family and many friends to celebrate his memory.  The family would like to thank Good Samaritan Hospital staff for the care and kindness shown to Charlie during his final days.  Also, thanks to Aspirus Hospital, Merrill Fire and EMS Services, and Waid Funeral Home.

Please direct memorial contributions to the Merrill Hockey Association.  We have established a memorial website for Charlie so that family and friends can post remembrances, tributes and photos.  Please go to www.mykeeper.com and search for “Charlie Phelps.” Waid Funeral & Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.  Online condolences may be made at www.waidfuneral.com .

Helen Mathilda Kressel

Helen Mathilda Kressel became a guest at the heavenly table of her Savior on Thursday, November 26, 2020.  Helen was 92 years of age having been born on October 30, 1928 at the home of her parents, Conrad G. and Mathilda M. (Weisshahn) Simon in the Town of Summit, Langlade County, Wisconsin.  On November 25, 1928 she was baptized and years later confirmed on June 20, 1943, both occurring at the St. Paul Evangelical Church also in the Town of Summit.  Helen grew up playing with her siblings, Paul, Dorothy, Carl and Hank and her many Simon cousins who lived nearby.  She went to grade school at Sunny Slope and then onto high school at Antigo where she roomed during the week with her brother and cousins, which resulted in many stories and laughter when shared years later.  She graduated from Antigo High School in June of 1946.  Helen was employed after high school at the Merrill newspaper and stayed with her Aunt Margaret (Simon) Granholm so she could walk to work.  She enjoyed meeting new people and working in a clerical position and continued to do so until she married Earl Kressel on September 10, 1955 also at St. Paul’s Church in the Town of Summit.   They lived in Gleason and Helen took pride in being a homemaker and being a care provider for her family, not only in raising their four children, James, Ruth, Kay and Robert, but also was there for other family  and friends by making and delivering food, taking to and from appointments, doing laundry and shopping and visiting those in need.   She was the Mother, Aunt, Friend and Grandma that had welcome arms any hour, any day and sacrificed her time to be there for others.  Although she set her family as a priority, and routinely had other family members under her wing and in their home, she took on other positions and jobs in the community.  Helen and Earl were janitors and provided maintenance for the Luther Memorial Lutheran Church for twenty years and took such pride in working in God’s house of worship.  Helen became known at the gatekeeper for the door and if you needed something at church, call Helen and she was there to open it.  She was involved in the Gleason community as she provided custodial work for the Town of Russell Town Hall, was a member of the Luther Memorial Lutheran Church Ladies Aid for countless years, was Secretary/Treasurer of the Aid Association for Lutherans Branch 3495 for over ten years, was a Brownie-Girl Scout Leader for fifteen years, served as a Cub Scout Leader and provided assistance in doing the weekly bulletin, monthly newsletter and communion register for Luther Memorial Lutheran Church well into her 80’s.  It was difficult for Helen to let this service to her Lord pass along to someone else because it was a part of her commitment.

In 2017 Helen moved to Pinecrest and it was still hard for her to be on the receiving end of caregiving, but her family is thankful and grateful to the staff at Pinecrest for doing so up until her passing on Thanksgiving evening.  She is survived by her four children:  James (Amy) Kressel, Ruth Kressel (Douglas Summers), Kay (Tim) Donahue and Robert Kressel; her seven grandsons:  Dyllan Linehan (Persia Erdrich), Jason Kressel, Adam Kressel, Joe (Valerie) Donahue, Callan (Lilly) Linehan, Nick Donahue (Kat Frye) and Gunnar Kressel; and her four great-grandsons:  Blake, Cohen, Patrick and Finlley.  Helen’s husband, Earl passed away in 2015 after the two were married for 60 years and no doubt Helen is hoping he has a few new jokes.   Her parents (Conrad and Mathilda Simon) as well as her siblings:  Ruth, Hank, Paul, Carl and Dorothy (Koprek) have all pre-deceased her.

Helen began and ended her days praying and reading the Bible, which her children did for her with the help of Pastor Greg Laska as her earthly journey ended.  She was a true and faithful servant of the Lord and for that reason the sorrow of her departure is helped by the beginning of her heavenly life.

Helen’s funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 5, 2020 at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, Gleason. The Rev. Greg Laska will officiate. Burial will follow in Summit Cemetery, Town of Summit, Langlande County. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Saturday at the church. MASKS WILL BE REQUIRED AND SOCIAL DISTANCING WILL BE ENCOURAGED. The Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill is assisting the family. Online condolences may be made at www.taylorstinefuneralhome.com.

In Loving Memory: I’m safely home in heaven, though I know you miss me so.  The Love I’ve always felt for you, within my heart still flows.  My spirit will remain with you, every single day, appearing as a rainbow or as ocean waves at play.  I’m the gentle rain that falls, and in the morning dew.  All that you see as beautiful, reflects my love for you.  I didn’t mean to cause you pain, my time had simply come.  The work that I was meant to do, on earth had been done.  I’m safely home in heaven, where eternal peace is mine.  And where, when God has called you, too, I’ll be forever thine.
