Prior to moving to Tomahawk, Billie lived most of her adult life in Burbank, IL, where she worked as a punch press operator for General Motors Manufacturing until a brain aneurysm left her partially paralyzed.  Before her disability, she enjoyed traveling and visited Las Vegas many times to see her favorite entertainer, Wayne Newton.  Later in life, she moved to Oak Lawn, IL.

Billie had a very faithful heart and enjoyed the many visits to Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church where she became friends to so many.  She enjoyed playing bingo and rarely missed a game.  She loved music and looked forward to the annual “Music on the River” at Memorial Park and the entertainment at Riverview.  Often she would join in the singing and requested her favorite song “How Great Thou Art”.  She cherished moments the family would visit, especially her great-grandchildren.  Billie, also known as “GG”, will be remembered for her sassiness, sense of humor, Leinenkugel’s Beer, and pizza.

Survivors include 2 Sons, Thomas (Donna) Pederson, of Tomahawk, and Kenneth (Karen) Pederson, of Lakeside, OR;

5 Grandchildren Shawn (Kari) Pederson, of Woodbury, MN, Christina (Michael) Rabideaux, of Eau Claire, WI, Sarah (Zach) Roeder, of Stevens Point, WI, Chantel Pederson, of Germany, and Kenneth Pederson, of Brainerd, MN.

Billie was preceded in death by her Parents, Perle and Reva; her Grandson, Nathan Pederson; 1 Brother, James Passer, and 1 Sister, Lou Pignatelli.

The family would like to thank Pastor Mark Gass and Jayne for not only the guidance over the years, but the concern, care, and friendship for Billie.  Also, a thank you to Riverview nursing staff for the wonderful care, and Mickey, for always making time to visit with Billie.  She treasured Mickey’s sweet nature, friendship, and the many laughs and stories they shared.  Finally, a special thank you to the Tomahawk Area Interfaith Volunteers (TAIV), and Doyle for providing our family with an unforgettable Christmas.

A Memorial Service for Billie Wielgos will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church, at 2:00 PM.  Interment took place at Chapel Hills Garden South Cemetery in Oak Lawn, IL.  Generations Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family.  You may view Billie’s obituary and leave online condolences at generationsfuneral.com.

DuWayne Robert Kleinschmidt passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2019 in Wausau, Wisconsin. He was born on July 24, 1943, to Robert and Hilda Kleinschmidt in the Town of Scott in Lincoln County, Wisconsin. He grew up on a small dairy farm and spent many hours working with his parents. He maintained a fondness for agriculture and the farm. His two children and grandson still own a portion of the farm, which is now in a forestry program.

DuWayne attended Trinity Lutheran School in Merrill and graduated from Merrill High School in 1961. He completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education at UWSP with a major in mathematics and minor in physics. He met Diane Jean Lambrecht at the Lincoln County Fair in 1959 and they married August 14, 1965. They have two children, Jennifer and Robert, and one grandson, Kolby.

DuWayne absolutely loved his family. Whether it be x-country or downhill ski trips, camping, biking, hiking, travelling, or baseball games, he truly enjoyed spending time with them.

He was the mathematics coordinator for the Wausau School District from 1974-1986. The last 15 years of his career, he served as the Director of Secondary Education. He taught courses for the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, Eau Claire and Superior. Upon retirement, he coordinated and taught a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership for Cardinal Stritch University. In the mid-80s he was a consultant with IBM and the Writing to Read program.

He was instrumental in bringing Japanese foreign exchange teachers to the Wausau School District and was the city of Wausau’s education delegate in 1995 who travelled to China for the Sister City project.

In his retirement years, DuWayne and wife, Diane, enjoyed travelling nationally and internationally and spending time in their vacation home in Seagrove Beach, Florida.

It is with great appreciation for the Wausau School District that he established the DuWayne R. Kleinschmidt Scholarship Trust to be given annually to a student at Wausau West and Wausau East.

Robert (Bob) Reno Egan, age 95, Wausau, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully at 4:25 p.m. on January 14, 2019 at Wausau Manor, in Wausau, Wisconsin.

Bob was born November 17, 1923, in Durand, Wisconsin, to the late Reno and Viola (nee Aitken) Egan.  A graduate of Wausau High School, he loved baseball and skiing, music, hunting and photography.  As a young man, and before ski runs were created on Rib Mountain, he regularly hiked to the top to ski down, especially when the powder was just so.  He knew the mountain well and assisted the first owners of the Rib Mountain Ski Lodge to lay trails for downhill skiing.  He served on the ski patrol, raced, and taught his two daughters to ski at Rib Mountain.

Bob served his country in World War II as an auto mechanic with the 131st Large Ordinance, 4th Armor under General Patton returning to Wausau thereafter to work at Drott Manufacturing Co.  It was in Wausau that he met and married Doyonis (Dodie) June Goetsch in 1948 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wausau.  Following an apprenticeship with a Wausau photography studio, Bob became a skilled portrait photographer.  He and his family moved to Merrill, WI where they owned and operated Robert’s Studio, providing Merrill residents with photographs for weddings, family gatherings, high school yearbooks, and local events for the newspaper.  It was in Merrill that Bob and his wife Dodie raised their two daughters.  Bob was a member of the Jaycees, served as a City alderman, played baseball on his church team, was a member of a bowling league, percussionist for the Merrill City Band, and created a ski school for local kids.

A member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Merrill, Bob was an active member of the congregation, singing in the choir and serving as the choir’s main soloist.  He performed for numerous funerals and weddings, during which he often served as the wedding photographer.  In 1980 he and his wife moved to Wausau where he worked for the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).  Bob then drove a medical transport van before fully retiring well into his 70’s.

Bob and Dodie loved to travel and upon retirement visited Great Britain, Alaska, retraced his WWII steps in Europe, and visited the Caribbean and Venezuela.  Bob was a member of the Wausau Elks Club, American Legion, and the Pommerisches Verrein.  He was a lifetime member of the VFW.   In 2011 Bob flew with other WWII veterans to Washington, D.C. as a member of the Wausau, September, 2011 Never Forgotten Honor Flight.  That experience was a highlight of his life.

He was a man of few words, of many long silences.  He was not a man of false smiles or empty words of praise.  He taught his children to see with more than their eyes, to hear with more than their ears, and to value silence.

Bob is survived by his wife of 70 years, Doyonis, his two children, Kolleen (Gar) Kellom of Saint Cloud, Minnesota; and Rhonda (Paul) Siegman of Germantown, Wisconsin; his grandchildren, Meagan Kellom, Guthrie (Megann) and Tocher (Darina) Kellom, Benjamin, Carolyn and Quinn Siegman, and Sheehan Siegman (Brian) Rammel; his great-grandchildren, Emmerson, Kohen, Makenzie, Keegan and Kamala Kellom.   He is further survived by loving nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother William Wayne Egan and his infant daughter Catherine.

A funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 501 Stewart Avenue, Wausau, with Rev. Zach Holdorf officiating.  Family and friends may call at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau, on Friday, January 18, beginning at 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and again at the church on Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Military honors provided by V.F.W. Burns Post 388 will follow the service at the church.  Private burial will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery, Village of Maine.

Gary A. Rajek

Gary A. Rajek, age 67, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at his residence in Merrill.  His family takes great comfort in the peace of his passing, with a full day of life having been lived, and a new opportunity to join those who have gone before him.  We will all meet again!

Gary was born May 9, 1951 to the late Robert and Genevieve (Ravey) Rajek in Merrill.  He spent his youth gallivanting around Merrill’s 6th ward with friends and family like Bobby Koepke, the Hinner boys, and Dickie Schotz; netting minnows for Nanny in Devil’s Creek (and every creek within a 100-mile radius) and testing his skills in the early years of the Merrill Ice Draggers.  Gary attended Merrill High School graduating with the Class of 1970 and furthered his formal education in the Machine Tool and Die program at Northcentral Technical College in Wausau.  In the late 60’s, after being a friend of the family for many years, Karen Hinner finally gave Gary the chance of a lifetime–the opportunity to bring her to a party in his white Ford car.  On the way home, she turned that passenger-side paint from white to purple streaks, and he knew it was meant to be.  The two exchanged wedding vows in Merrill on February 8, 1975.  She survives.

Gary was a member of the executive leadership team for Merrill Iron & Steel for many years.  He worked in nearly every facet of the business, with his most recent formal title being Director of Transportation.  He was the type of leader that found deep value from the input of others–always listening and open to ideas that were different from his own.  He leaned into his own expertise, not to further his “way”, but instead used it as a fail-safe when enabling approaches brought forward by others.

Special mention to a few of Gary’s deal making friends include Virgil Kufahl who knew where to find all types of machinery or equipment at the right price and Tommy and his late father, Lenny Salzman spending many years doing special “favors” for one another.

He was a skilled cook, grill-master and master meat smoker.  He was a mechanical genius, rarely encountering a motor he could not fix, a problem he could not solve, or a pot he could not stir.  He took pride in his gardening, both flower and vegetable, and enjoyed building greenhouses, watering schemes, and harvest methods to keep his penchant for invention satisfied.  Gary was also an avid pool player, joining leagues and competitions, playing most recently for his long-time friends, Tom and Bev Godleske, and following their retirement, Outboard.

Gary was a collector of many things, getting most excited by dumpsters and “curbside markets” with cardboard signs reading “Free” or better yet, “Free–it works!”  He was also a grandmaster deal maker, buying and selling projects and parts through smooth talk, a handshake, and a six-pack.  His collection includes cars, lawnmowers, grills and countless trinkets that he didn’t even know he needed.  He enjoyed tinkering with the treasures that he would find and passed his knowledge of all things mechanical to his sons and grandsons whenever he could.

His family was first and foremost in his life, and he treasured his time spent with them.  In particular, he loved spending time with them in the great outdoors.  Despite taking trips, big and small, north or west, to hunt for game like elk and deer, Gary preferred to watch others take the shot.  For him, it was all about the opportunity to be experiencing those moments with those he loved most.  This was true of his joy in fishing as well.  No matter where he went—a Lake Michigan charter boat, his “secret spot,” in the S.S. Minnow, or out of his truck window on the ice—Gary lived for the moment always enjoying watching others land a “big one.”

Pops was constantly looking for new and crazy ways to bond with his kids and grandkids–from tapping trees for the sugar shack and a honey bee hobby, to roller coasters and jet boats, he was happiest when laughing alongside his wife, kids and grandkids.  Gary’s ready laughter and quick wit will be cherished by his family and all who knew him.

Gary was remarkable in his natural ability put others at ease; his incredible capacity for teaching–often laughing through mistakes and leading by encouraging others to never be afraid to fail.  His family and friends will remember how he was always there with a helping hand and will deeply miss him.

Gary is survived by his wife, Karen Rajek, sons Richard and Greg (Mary) Rajek, daughters Jill (Peter) Fry and Katie (Chad Franzen) Rajek, and daughter-in-law Amy (Stephen) Rajek; grandchildren Sara Rajek, Bryce, Brayden and Britney Rajek, Max and Clara Rajek, Amelia and Elsie Fry and Khloe Everett; his dog “Zoey” and his many cats.  He was preceded in death by a son Stephen Rajek; brothers Wayne and Robert (PJ) Rajek; his parents; and mother-in-law Mary Hinner.

A celebration of life service for Gary will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ in Merrill.  The Rev. Kyle Carnes will officiate.  Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 from 4-8 p.m. at Waid Funeral Home in Merrill, and again at the church on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.  Burial will immediately follow the service in Merrill Memorial Park Cemetery.

Jerri, as she was affectionately known, was born to the late Oscar and Erna Weaver, June 20, 1940, in Merrill, Wisconsin. She was a precocious little sister to Paul, and protective big sister to Robert.

Throughout her life, Jerri was known for her sweet and welcoming nature that won the trust and hearts of many, especially her students. Her signature gift of joy, shown through her constant smiling, laughter, and engaging sense of humor will never be forgotten.

Jerri graduated from Merrill High School in 1958 and received a BA in Education from the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point in 1962. She later went on to earn a Master’s degree in Education in 1978.

While she was in college, she met the love of her life and partner-in-crime, James Bloechl. They married on May 31, 1963 in Minnesota. Married for 55 years, Jerri and Jim raised their 3 rambunctious sons Thomas, Peter and Andrew in Merrill.

Jerri was a devoted and loving mother. Mothering to her meant being everything and anything her sons needed her to be; best friend, alibi, confidante, battle-axe, cheerleader, bulldozer, reality check, co-conspirator, drill sergeant, clown, disciplinarian, banker…she was all that, and then some. She was also mama bear to the many dogs, cats, gerbils and other critters (both of the two legged and four persuasion) that were drawn to her warmth and her welcoming home.

With a real zest for life, Jerri enjoyed music, dancing, gardening, teaching, creative writing, playing bridge, and travelling. She was a voracious reader, devouring books with gusto at every opportunity. She loved riverside living; a cocktail in hand on a slow pontoon ride every evening on her beloved Lake Alexander was her idea of heaven on earth. She was an amazing cook given to whipping up outstanding meals, sweets and desserts for her always appreciative family and guests. “Hangry” didn’t exist in her home.

Jerri adored children and was a wonderful grandma to her five grandchildren. She was the cool grandma who was always ready with laughs and wonderful treats. At the same time, she was fiercely protective of her grandkids, always having their backs. She had an amazing knack for imparting knowledge and values in entertaining and meaningful ways. Having several grandchildren blessed with artistic ability, Jerri introduced them to ChalkFest This became an annual ritual for the family for many years where the grandchildren created some amazing art. Family events like these made Jerri the happiest.

A teacher in every sense of the word, she was extremely committed to giving less privileged children every opportunity to succeed educationally. She was a gifted Reading Specialist at Merrill High School from 1981 till her retirement in 1998.  She then used those skills to promote reading and literacy skills among preschoolers in the community. Jerri was instrumental in bringing FIRST BOOK to Merrill, which eventually became Reading Buddies.

Jerri is survived by her husband, James, her three sons: Thomas (Sheila), of Green Bay; Peter, of Wausau; and Andrew (Sue), of Milwaukee. She leaves behind five grandchildren; Garth, Jacob (Ali), Rachel (Jordan), Alexander and Angela. She is also survived by her brothers, Paul (Judi) and Robert (Judy), and their children.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Jerri’s name to Reading Buddies of Lincoln County or the Lincoln County Humane Society.

A private celebration of her life will be held in the future.

“Mom…I’ll get the drinks, you get the snacks. Meet you down at the boat…”

We wish we could have had one more cocktail cruise with you before your sun had set. We love you Mom.

Kathleen Ann Sefcik, 72, of Cleveland, TN, unexpectedly passed on, on Saturday, December 15, 2018, surrounded by her family at Tennova Health Care, Cleveland, TN.

Kathleen (Kathy, Hummer, Tag) a native of Polar and Merrill, WI, was the daughter of the late Orlin Folkedahl and the late Fern Krueger Gulke. She was a graduate of Wisconsin Academy (Colombus, WI), attended Andrews University (Barrien Springs, MI) and graduating from Hinsdale (IL) School of Nursing and the University of Chattanooga (TN) with a BSN degree.

She enjoyed sunrises and sunsets, gardening, quilting, antique hunting, gift giving, traveling with friends, time with and hosting family. An edited excerpt from a 50th high school reunion publication, “after graduating Hinsdale in 1968 I moved to Hollywood, Florida. By myself. Didn’t plan it that way, but that’s what happened. No money, just a map. Didn’t matter. It was my first big adventure, and I thought it was GREAT! Kentucky, Tennessee! New states! New things to see! I arrived at my rental house on Thursday, found my way to the beach Friday after my job interview, and started work on Monday. Things were simpler in those days.”

“I met George in Florida, and we were married in 1970. He, a transplant from New York, we bonded over the absence of snow shovels in our lives and the Miami Dolphins. Both of our children, Teresa and Glen, were born there. In the fall of ’75 we moved to Tennessee and have lived in Bradley County for 43+ years.”

Her 40 year career as a registered nurse and administrator included hospital floor nursing, ICU, ER nurse supervisor, and specializations in geriatrics via home health and hospice. Beloved and respected by patients, colleagues and employees.

Kenneth G. VanDerGeest, 86,  of Merrill, WI went to his heavenly home on February 8, 2019.  Ken was born in Wausau, WI on  October 8, 1932 to Joe and Anna VanDerGeest.  Ken loved his family dearly and was very proud of each of them.  His greatest joy was cooking prime rib roasts on his “special prime rib only” grill and sharing it with family and friends.  His choice “hamburgers” were a tremendous favorite also.

He had a passion for work.  “To be able to work is one of God’s great gifts”, was his belief.  He was the only person we knew that always looked forward to Monday morning.  Ken worked tremendously hard to support his growing family.  He owned and operated a small meat market in Antigo, WI from 1965 -1969.  In 1970 he was offered an opportunity to be the first distributor for Tombstone Pizza and successfully built regional sales in the upper peninsula of Michigan.  He retired in 1996 and pursued a new venture of opening accounts for Pep’s Pizza.

As often happens, our greatest joys come later in life.  Ken’s passion was driving a truck and delivering product.  He felt so privileged to be able to drive for a company owned by one of his sons.  In fact, he made his last trip 2 days before he left us.

There always were dogs in his life.  Chihuahuas, a Great Dane and everything in between found their way into his heart.  His latest, Lacie, a Yorke,  was his constant companion and was with him the last day Ken spent with us.

Prior to his marriage to Mary Ann (Schewe) VanDerGeest on September 8, 1956, Ken enlisted in the US Air Force where he served from 1951-1955.  He was stationed in Thule, Greenland for 1 year.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ann, as well as 10 of his 13 children; Karen (Bob) Akey of Merrill, WI;  Debbie (Bill) Groskopf of Nashotah, WI; Patti (Mike) Boyd of Merrill; Tim (Carol) VanDerGeest of Birmingham, AL; Jim VanDerGeest (Deana DeWan) of Wausau; Nancy (Johnny) Dewar of Merrill; Steve VanDerGeest (Kristin Akey) of Minneapolis, MN; Kelly (Jon) Leiskau of Merrill; Katie (Will) Yutuc of Merrill; Marci (Dale) Rankin of Tomahawk, WI;  26 grandchildren and 17 great grand children.  He is further survived by his brother, Gerrit (Chub) VanDerGeest and sister, Marlene Stevenson.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister; two sons, Michael and Rick, a baby daughter,  Catherine and  grandson, Christopher Grubb.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be sent to the Lincoln County Humane Society, Palliative Care Unit of Aspirus Hospital in Wausau,  WI or the charity of your choice.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Ken will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at 11 AM at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.  Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 from 4PM to 7PM at Waid Funeral Home and again on Wednesday at the church from 10AM until the time of service.  Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Cemetery.  Military honors will be performed by the Merrill VFW Post #1638.

Marcelle “Marcie” A. Schmit

“I just want to go to sleep and awake in glory.” These were the words that Marcelle “Marcie” A. Schmit, age 88, of Tomahawk, Wisconsin, shared with her children only days before her death on February 11, 2019, when Marcie went to sleep peacefully, hands folded in prayer, and awoke in God’s glory. Marcie was born on January 4, 1931 in Irma, Wisconsin, to Herbert and Jennie (Peterson) Lange. She met Eugene J. Schmit and married the “love of her life” in 1952. Together, Marcie and Gene had five children and they wove their life around their children, the church, and community. Marcie was always the person behind the scenes, helping Gene build his business and engage in community service, encouraging him and doing whatever it took to help manage his calendar and the business of life. Theirs was a life and home filled with love, laughter, music, friendship, and faith. Marcie was a woman who daily practiced gracious hospitality. She always had a cup of coffee waiting for friend or stranger, the cookie jars were always filled, and freshly baked bread and pies were constantly served with a smile. Marcie was a dedicated friend, going out of her way to offer rides to shut-ins, running errands for the ill, taking annual Christmas baskets overflowing with her favorite baked goods to family, friends and strangers, or simply sitting and listening with a smile or a tear as so many shared their lives with her. Known affectionately to many as “Auntie Marcie” or “Grandma,” Marcie was a lover of children. Through the years she opened her home and heart to many children other than her own. And, regardless of which children were in her presence, she loved them, she cared for them, she taught them to be their very best person, she prayed with them and for them, and she served as a model of one who loved and served her God. As a woman of faith, Marcie was deeply devoted to the life of the church. Marcie served in many ways at Grace Lutheran Church: She helped set the table for communion and filled countless tables with fellowship or funeral meals. She hosted youth group activities in her home, she was active in Bible study groups, and she helped in any way possible but always behind the scenes. She never wanted praise for any of her labors of love, but always saw her service to the church, to the community, and to her family as a way of sharing her love for God. Life was not always easy for Marcie, and yet she loved it and lived it to the fullest. Whether pounding the pavement of New York City or sailing around San Francisco Bay, whether sipping warm beer in Germany or munching on fresh tortillas in Guatemala, whether sitting on her deck and enjoying the beauty of nature or mowing a never-ending lawn, Marcie was always busy. Marcie was a woman who was always up for the adventure of life. But no matter what she was doing, she enjoyed her time with her family – including her church family – more than anything.

Marcie is survived by her children: David (Cathleen) Schmit of Tomahawk, Rev. Dr. Clayton (Carol) Schmit of Stevens Point, Rev. Diane (Estuardo) Dardόn of Prospect Heights, IL, and Donna Schmit of Portage. Her legacy of love and life lives on in her surviving grandchildren: Christie, Michael, Caitlyn, Peter, Hannah, Kyrie, Jake, Brian, and Cathryn and her three great grandchildren, Gabe, Ayla, and Theo. Marcie is further survived by her brothers – Everett (Helen) Lange of Tomahawk, Arnold (Betty) Lange of Merrill and Harmon (Debbie) Lange of Oregon; one sister – Adeline Saltzman of New Mexico. Marcie is preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband, her son – Brian, and brothers – Delmore Lange and Eldon Lange. Marcie often commented that life with all of its joys and sorrows was in God’s hands. Today, Marcie holds God’s hand and walks in God’s glory. Her legacy and spirit of love, caring, hospitality, service, and joy for life lives on in all those whose lives were touched by this remarkable woman of faith and love.

The Funeral Service for Marcie Schmit will take place at 11:00AM on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Grace Lutheran Church in Tomahawk. Pastor Mark Ziemer will officiate. Visitation will take place on Friday, February 15 at Krueger Family Funeral Home from 4:00PM until 7:00PM. Visitation will continue on Saturday morning from 10:00AM until the time of service at 11:00AM. Marcie will be buried in Greenwood Cemetery in the spring. Krueger Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services is assisting the family with arrangements. You may view the full obituary and leave online condolences at www.kruegerfamilyfuneral.com
