Jeanette Harkner
Jeanette Harkner, age 88, passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at Pine Crest Nursing Home while under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice. She was born on February 15, 1928 to the late Henry and Sophie (Tobalski) Krahn in the town of Merrill, WI. Jeanette attended St. Francis Catholic School in Merrill, WI. She met Fred Harkner and the two exchanged vows on April 14, 1945 in Merrill WI. He preceded her in death on June 19, 2004.
Jeanette and her husband owned Harkner’s Bait Shop and then went on to work at Anson Gilkey until her retirement. Jeanette enjoyed boating, fishing and trips to the casino. She loved music and liked to sing, and she was especially fond of dancing the jitterbug with her spry husband, Fred. She delighted in spending time with her family and her dogs. Jeanette was a loving and caring woman that will be sadly missed.
Jeanette is survived by her sons: Fred Jr. (Bonnie) Harkner of Merrill and Bob (Joanne) Harkner of Eagle River, daughters: Shirley Klug of Merrill, Judy (Richard) Henson of Merrill, Jan (Jim) Abbs of Wawaka, IN, Tammy (John) Degner of Merrill, 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 6 great great-grandchildren, sisters: Lynn Thompson and Dorothy Sanborn. She was preceded in death by her parents: Henry and Sophie Krahn, her husband: Fred E. Harkner Sr.; a son: Timothy Harkner; son-in-law: Daniel Klug; a sister: Lucille Holzem; and a brother: Les Krahn.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and again on Thursday, September 15, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., all at Waid Funeral Home. The burial will immediately follow the visitation and take place at St. Francis Cemetery in Merrill on Thursday, September 15, 2016.

Karel Kretlow
Karel Kretlow, age 83, of Merrill, passed away Sunday, September 11, 2016 at Pine Crest Nursing Home under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care & Hospice Services. She was born January 24, 1933 in Merrill to the late Eugene and Mabel (Meyer) Rasmussen. On March 28, 1953 she and Arthur were united in marriage. He preceded her in death in April of 1979.
Karel attended and graduated from Merrill High School. Karel then worked as a desk clerk at Pine Ridge Motel. She ran an in home day care until her retirement, caring for not only her grandchildren but many of the neighborhood kids as well. You could always find a book near her and when she wasn’t reading she enjoyed watching old classic movies on TCM. Karel was a lifelong Democrat and a faithful supporter. She enjoyed a martini a day which kept her young. Karel was a fun loving, outspoken lady who loved being around people. She also enjoyed cooking for the people she invited into her home.
Survivors include her two sons: Stephan (Patrice) Kretlow, Brookfield, and Jon (Lynn) Kretlow, Waukegan, IL; daughter-in-law: Linda Kretlow; four grandchildren: Mike, Tim (Amy), Natalie and Olivia; great-grandson: Jackson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Mabel, husband, Arthur, two sons, Kris and Timothy J. Kretlow, and sister, Shirley Lange.

‘DON’T CRY BECAUSE IT’S OVER, SMILE BECAUSE IT HAPPENED’
Alexandra M. ‘Sandy’ Zettler, age 80, of Merrill, passed away on Wednesday, September 14, 2016, under the care of her loving family, the Pine Crest Nursing Home staff, and hospice care, after succumbing to injuries sustained while doing what she treasured most – walking downtown.
Sandy was born January 1, 1936, in Marshfield, daughter of the late Paul and Lucile (Hanna) Steger. After graduating from Columbus High School in Marshfield, Sandy did pediatric nursing training at a hospital in Chicago working with orphans. She married Theodore ‘Ted’ Zettler on July 30, 1955, in Marshfield. He preceded her in death on June 10, 1989. Sandy and Ted owned and operated Zettler’s Bakery in Merrill for 20 years. At the time of her retirement, Sandy was employed at Rite Screen in Merrill.
Sandy was a devoted member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Merrill. She helped take care of her granddaughters Kristy and Katie as they were growing up, and also took care of her beloved neighbor boy Nickolas. Sandy volunteered for many years at the gift shop at Good Samaritan Health Center, Merrill. She loved walking downtown everyday and going to County Market to see her cherished friend Bob White. Sandy enjoyed riding her stationary bike, trips to the casino, and receiving homemade goodies from Tom Wistein. She loved dogs and all animals. Sandy especially enjoyed spending time with her three great grandchildren. Her one and only great grandson, Alexander Theodore, was named after her and her husband and she was very proud of that. Sandy suffered her first stroke in 2011, and the staff at Pine Crest was instrumental in getting her back to health and living on her own again. The staff at Pine Crest referred to Sandy as the “Miracle Patient”. Sandy’s family would like to thank the staff at Pine Crest Nursing Home and also Aspirus Comfort Care & Hospice Services for their care.
Sandy is survived by two daughters, Lee (Mike) Harbath and Brenda Zettler, both of Merrill; two granddaughters, Kristy (Rick) Neumann and Katie Kufahl (fiancée, Eric Meyer), both of Merrill; two great-granddaughters, Lilyann Rae Kufahl and Malayna Mae Kufahl, both of Merrill; one great-grandson, Alexander Theodore Neumann, Merrill; one sister, Leurelle Reynolds, Wausau; her mother-in -law, Gladys Zettler, Loyal; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Julie Zettler, Loyal; her sister-in-law, Judy Zettler, Loyal; and several nieces and nephews. Sandy is also survived by Debbie Alvin, whom she considered like a daughter; her beloved neighbor boy Nickolas Schuelke; and special friends Cleone Turner, Glen and Sherry Schuelke, Rose Akey and Bobbie Bonnell, all of Merrill. Sandy was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore ‘Ted’ Zettler; her parents, Paul and Lucile Steger; her sister, Patricia Lapore; her brothers-in-law, Joseph Lapore and Ted Reynolds; her nephew, Paul Reynolds; and her father-in-law, Melvin Zettler.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 PM Tuesday, September 20, 2016, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Merrill. Father Chris Kemp will preside. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Anthony Cemetery, Loyal. Family and friends may remember Sandy beginning at 11:00 AM Tuesday at the church. Wilmer B. Thurs
Wilmer B. Thurs, age 89, of the Town of Hamburg, Marathon County, passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
Wilmer was born March 9, 1927, in the Town of Hamburg, son of the late Gustav and Gertrude (Mueller) Thurs. He married Alladine Wilde on April 10, 1948, in Rib Falls, WI. She survives. Wilmer and Alladine dairy farmed in Hamburg. Wilmer loved work horses, dogs and cattle. He enjoyed running around the back 80 acres with his 4-wheeler, making firewood, listening to polka music and reading. Wilmer was a member of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hamburg, and served on the church council. He also served with the Hamburg Volunteer Fire Department. Wilmer and Alladine enjoyed taking many trips after retirement.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Alladine Thurs of Hamburg; two daughters, Marlene (Wayne) Teske of Merrill and Kathie (Dennis) Smith of Tomahawk; four sons, Lyle (Susan) Thurs of Hamburg, Ivan Thurs of Hamburg, Kenneth Thurs of Lublin, WI and Randy Thurs of Hamburg; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Norman Thurs of Merrill, Harvey (Mavis) Thurs of Schofield and Elgart Thurs of Hamburg; one sister-in-law, Iris Thurs of Wausau; and several nieces and nephews. Wilmer was preceded in death by his parents, Gustav and Gertrude Thurs; two great-granddaughters, Harper Knaack and Ryley Smith; two daughters-in-law, Sandy (Mrs. Ivan) Thurs and Sandy (Mrs. Randy) Thurs; one brother, Orville Thurs; and one sister-in-law, Shirley (Mrs. Elgart) Thurs.
The funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, September 17, 2016, at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hamburg. Pastor Philip Bogen will officiate. John “Jack” Wendt
John “Jack” Wendt, age 93, of Merrill, died Sunday, September 18, 2016. He was born April 28, 1923 in Merrill, Wisconsin to the late Albert and Emma (Eggers) Wendt. He married Joyce Jopke at Trinity Parsonage on December 1, 1945. She preceded him in death on November 7, 2010.
Jack enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a life member of St. John Lutheran Church, National Rifle Association and North American Hunting Club.

Jane D. McCarthy
Jane D. McCarthy, age 91, of Merrill, WI, passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2016, at Pine Crest Nursing Home, under the care of Ministry Home Care Hospice. Jane was born September 14, 1925, to the late Thomas and Martha (Deitrich) Thompson. She was married to Daniel McCarthy on April 30, 1949; he passed away in 1982.
Jane was born and raised in Merrill and was a graduate of Merrill High School. After graduation, Jane moved to Milwaukee for a short time before returning to her hometown. She was a teletype operator with Montgomery Ward for several years. She retired as a dental assistant for Dr. Piikkila’s office after many years of service. Following retirement, she moved to Pier Lake, WI, where she lived for over 25 years. She recently returned to Merrill to be closer to her family.
Jane enjoyed casino trips with her lady friends and loved the holidays, especially decorating her yard around Halloween and Christmas. She enjoyed playing cribbage, doing crossword puzzles, knitting, sewing and crafts. Jane loved the time spent at the Lake and was an avid Milwaukee Brewer fan.
Survivors include her 2 Sons, Christopher McCarthy, of Tomahawk, and Erin McCarthy, of Merrill; 2 Daughters, Maureen (John) Heck, of Wausau, and Megan (Ken) Marth, of Merrill; 2 Grandchildren, Nick and Kris; 1 Step Grandson, John; and 3 Step Great-Grandchildren, James, Micah and Noah. Jane is further survived by long-time Special Friend, Ken Plaman; her Best Friend, Nancy VanDreel; and many Nieces and Nephews. She was preceded in death by her Parents, Thomas and Martha; her Husband, Daniel; 3 Brothers, Claire, Ken, and Twin Brother, Jack; and 5 Sisters, Cam, Virginia, Eilleen, Irene and Rosebud.

Garth J. Swanson
Garth J. Swanson, 68, of Merrill went to heaven on Monday, September 19, 2016.
Garth was born November 16, 1947, in Brainerd, Minnesota, son of the late Edwin and Genevieve (James) Swanson. He is survived by his beloved wife, Freida Swanson of Merrill; two daughters, Rachael (Ryu) Mizuno of Chicago and Carrie (Jon) Dulin of Rhinelander; one son, Zachary (Misti) Swanson of Kronenwetter; four grandchildren, Sayaka and Keitaro Mizuno, Isaac Dulin and Arleigh Swanson; one sister-in-law, Mary Smith of Rice Lake; and treasured dog, Stasha. Garth was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Genevieve Swanson; and one brother, Donald Smith.
Garth enlisted in the United States Navy on July 8, 1968 where he served as an advisor to Vietnamese gun boat units. While in Vietnam, he was also active in the Mobile Riverine Force, a U.S. Army and U.S. Navy coalition that comprised a significant portion of the Brown Water Navy. Garth married Freida Laphen on February 5, 1972 before being honorably discharged from the Navy on May 5, 1972.
Garth began his teaching career in Clayton, Wisconsin and moved to Merrill in 1977 where he took a position as a 6th grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary School. Garth moved to Alaska for two years where he continued his career in education until he and his family returned to Merrill where he took a position working in special education. He eventually became the principal at the former Scott and Midway Elementary Schools. Garth spent the majority of his adult life devoted to shaping and inspiring the young minds of the Merrill community until his retirement as principal of Washington Elementary School in 2001.
With a passion for public service matched only by the fondness for his dog, Stasha, Garth served on the Lincoln County Board for three years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bird watching, reading, and having coffee with his coffee groups. He saved his deepest love, however, for his grandchildren who he referred to as his “best gift ever.”
Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Friday, September 23, 2016 at the Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, September 24, 2016, at the Holy Cross Chapel at Bell Tower Residence, Merrill. Father Charles Hoffmann will preside. Burial will take place at St. Francis Xavier Veterans Memorial with graveside military rites conducted by V.F.W. Post 1638, Merrill.

Paul Ritchie
Paul Ritchie, age 68, passed away on Friday, September 23, 2016, under the care of his loving family, the nursing home staff, and hospice services at Pine Crest Nursing Home, Merrill.
Paul was born February 22, 1948, in Bessemer, Michigan, son of the late Oscar and Eunice (Grigsby) Ritchie. He married Georgene Lane on September 18, 2015. She survives. Paul’s career was with the U.S. Army. He retired honorably after more than 20 years of service. Paul enjoyed fishing; county western music, especially Willie Nelson; and the Green Bay Packers.
Survivors include his wife, Georgene Ritchie, Merrill; daughter, Rosalie Oestreich, Wausau; son, Chris (Shawna) Kletzine, Merrill; six grandchildren, Star, Spence, Bram, Chance, Allie and Zoe; several siblings, including his brothers, Kurt (Kelly) Ritchie and Carl (Laura) Ritchie, both of Texas, and Dwight (Cheryl) Ritchie, Oxford, Wisconsin, twin sister, Paula (Roger) Lamp, Elkton, South Dakota, and sister, Carol (Richard) Schotz, Neenah, Wisconsin; and other relatives and friends.
A Private Funeral Service was held. Burial was in Snow Hill Cemetery, Town of Scott, with graveside military rites conducted by the Merrill V.F.W. Post 1638 Honor Guard. The Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, assisted the family with arrangements.

David D. Haring
David D. Haring, age 84, of Tomahawk, passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2016, at Ministry Sacred Heart Hospital under the care of Ministry Home Care Hospice. Dave was born August 9, 1932, in Merrill, WI, to the late Richard and Pauline (VanStrydonk) Haring. He was married to Kathy Buss on October 2, 1965; she survives.
Dave graduated from Green Bay East High School. After graduation, he honorably served in the United States Army. An active community member, Dave was a former Tomahawk Alderman and proud member of the VFW, American Legion and DAV. Dave felt privileged to participate in the Never Forgotten Honor Flight experience in the spring of 2013. He enjoyed deer and grouse hunting, playing horseshoes and cribbage, and selling raffle tickets. In his earlier years, he managed the Harrison Baseball Team. Dave was an avid Milwaukee Brewers fan.
Survivors include his Wife, Kathy Haring, of Tomahawk; His Son, Kevin (Stacey) Haring, of Tomahawk; 1 Daughter, Heidi Haring, of Milwaukee; 2 Brothers, John Haring, of Heafford Junction, and Dan (Lolita) Haring, of Nokomis. He is further survived by his Special Grandson/Exchange Student, Waji; his “furry” Grandchild, Phoenix; and many Nieces and Nephews.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, Richard and Pauline; 9 Brothers, Francis, Ben, Vic, Ted, George, Al, Emil, Pete and Clem; and 2 Sisters, Marge and Rose.

Patricia A. “Pat” Horgen
Patricia A. “Pat” Horgen, 89, Green Bay, died peacefully Wednesday, September 21, 2016. She was born on February 5, 1927, in Merrill, WI to Otis and Gertrude (Lange) Parshall.
Pat was a graduate of Merrill High School, Class of 1945. She worked as a secretary for several years before marrying Lester M. Horgen. They met in Merrill and were married in 1951. Shortly after they moved to Green Bay where Lester worked for the Dept. of Corrections. In 1956, they bought their house in Allouez and lived there for over 30 years. Pat was a caring, loving, kind, generous, quit witted person, and was a good caregiver for elderly people in their homes. She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker.
Pat is survived by her son, Wayne Horgen; daughter, Susan Pycha; granddaughter, Heather Pycha; brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Darlene Parshall; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester; grandson, Frankie; her parents; and a brother, Donald Parshall.

Ralph (Butch) C. Nebel
Ralph (Butch) C. Nebel, age 68, of Merrill, passed away Saturday, September 24, 2016 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. He was born on July 30, 1948 in Waukegan, Illinois to the late William and Bertha(VerHagen) Nebel. On May 29, 2010 Ralph and Kathryn Klempke were united in marriage in Merrill, WI.
Butch proudly served our country in the United States Marine Corp from 1965-1968. He was active in Hill 65 Happy Valley Fire Base and performed many important duties while serving and also received a purple heart during his time in the Vietnam War. He worked construction for years, and was skilled at many things. He enjoyed fishing and making his own lures, being outdoors, and reading. He was a big Chicago Bears fan as well. He was a loving husband and family man who enjoyed nothing more than giving his family members grief and picking on them. Ralph and his wife moved to Pine River to get a taste of the country life, there they raised chickens. Ralph enjoyed raising them and building his chicken coops and selling the fresh eggs. Unfortunately, when his health started to decline they moved back to Merrill. He will be deeply missed but happily remembered.
Survivors include his wife: Kathryn(Klempke) Nebel, Merrill; a daughter: Diana(Brett) Nelson, California; two sisters: Salene Ruhl and Kathy(Paul) Hameau both of Merrill; a granddaughter: Arianna; a grandson: Aiden; Sisters in-law: Marie(Lawrence) Kleinschmidt, Merrill; Deb(Tom) Schulz, brothers in-law: Mike(Sandy) Klempke, Merrill and Dan(Jonnie) Klempke, Merrill; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: William and Bertha Nebel; two brothers: William Nebel, Hayward, WI and James Nebel, Waconda, IL.

Emma Melauskas
Emma Melauskas, 96, died on Monday, September 26, 2016, at Pine Crest Nursing Home in Merrill, WI.
A memorial service for Emma was held on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at Waid Funeral Home in Merrill. Deacon Jim officiated. She was later laid to rest alongside her mother and sister at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Buffalo Grove, IL.
Emma was born on October 27, 1919, to Joseph and Valeria Melauskas in Chicago, IL. As a young woman, Emma worked in support of the US WWII effort manufacturing vital supplies for our troops. She was later one of the original Harvey Girls working for Fred Harveys in Chicago’s Union Station, during the golden age of railroad travel. In 1971 she bought a home for herself and her mother in Elk Grove Village, IL, where she cared for her mother until her death at age 98. In 2003, she moved to Merrill where she lived on State Street before moving to Pine Crest in 2010.
Her interests included devotion to her family, fishing, gardening, bowling, current events and the many people she has charmed with her sparkling smile, great sense of humor and caring heart.
Emma is survived by her sister, Lucille Gustafson of Tomahawk and loving nieces, Marie Landes of Merrill and Cheri Ellis Campbell of Richmond, IL and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Bernice Ellis and nephew, Eugene Gustafson. She will be missed and fondly remembered by all who have known her.

Mark Arthur Hagedorn, the son of Richard and Dolores (Wegner) Hagedorn, was born on March 8, 1957 in Merrill. He was baptized in the former St. James Church in the Town of Pine River, and was confirmed at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Merrill.
He was raised on the family farm in the Town of Pine River, attended Pine River Elementary School, Merrill Junior High and Merrill Senior High, graduating in 1975. Following graduation, he attended UW Marathon and UW Stevens Point.
He was a milk trucker for the Pine River Cheese Factory, a truck driver for A & P Pavers, a band instrument repair specialist, a dairy farmer (1984-1994), retiring in 2005 due to health problems.
Mark was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Merrill. He was an active participant in the Fair Stand, Lenten Fish Fries, Polka Services and other committees and activities.
Music was Mark’s forte. He played in the Junior and Senior High bands, the Jazz band, Merrill City Band and UWSP band.
He had a natural aptitude for music, was a versatile musician having many musical abilities and understood the many styles of music composition. He was proficient in playing many different instruments, his specialty being the tenor saxophone. He was a member of the Dick Richin’s Orchestra (his dad’s band) for which he arranged the musical compositions. He was also a member of the Jay Tlusty Variety Band and other dance bands in the area.
Mark was an active member of the Polka Club, Square Dance Club and the German Club.
He loved traveling on tour with the Dan Gruetzmacher Polka Band and the Polka Productions tours. His travels took him to all 50 states, Mexico, Canada and the Bahamas.
Mark was an avid reader, played a variety of card games, attended musical performances and watched sports on TV. He especially enjoyed football and professional wrestling.
Survivors include his father, Richard Hagedorn, Sr. of Merrill; his sister, Nancy (Phil) Woller of Plover; his brother, Daniel Hagedorn of Merrill; a nephew, Richard (Hannah) Hagedorn III of Madison; and his sister-in-law, Joan Hagedorn of Madison; and other relatives and friends. Mark was preceded in death by his mother, Dolores Hagedorn; and his brother, Richard Hagedorn, Jr.
The funeral services for Mark A. Hagedorn will begin at 11:00 AM Friday, September 30, 2016, at Holy Cross Chapel-Bell Tower Residence. The Rev. Missy Holdorf will officiate. Burial will follow in Merrill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Friday at Holy Cross Chapel-Bell Tower Residence. Patricia A. Kroening
Patricia A. Kroening, age 85, passed away Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital surrounded by family. She was born on March 6, 1931 to the late William and Vadalias (Bessey) Petterson in Wausau where she was raised. Patricia and Davis Kroening were united in marriage on June 24, 1949 in Wausau, a union lasting over 67 years. He preceded her in death on August 2, 2016.
Patricia attended and graduated from Wausau High School. She went on to earn her license as a certified nursing assistant. Patricia worked as a CNA at Pine Crest for at least 14 years until she retired. She had previously worked at Weinbrenner Shoe Factory and at Merrill Candy. She enjoyed meeting new people when handing out food and working demonstrations at various places. Patricia and Davis enjoyed playing cribbage, pinochle and other card games and also bowled together on a league for over 20 years, starting at Dave’s Bowl-A-Dome and moving over to Les & Jim’s. She loved traveling to Vegas twice a year and enjoyed playing the penny machines at the casino back home. Patricia also enjoyed playing Bingo at Les & Jim’s and QVC shopping. She raised chickens for many years and sold the fresh eggs to many neighbors and friends. Patricia was a passionate knitter and was so good she could knit in her sleep! She was a very caring, funny lady with a big heart who shared many great stories. Patricia loved her family dearly and enjoyed talking about them. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in the town of Pine River.
Patricia is survived by her daughter, Debbie (Dana) Garber, Merrill; son, Mark (Peggy) Kroening, Merrill; grandchildren: Gerald (Lori) Garber, Wausau; Brenda (Lonnie) James, Merrill; Tanya (Matt) Robl, Merrill; Ashley (Mike) Dornstreich, Rothschild; six great-grandchildren and one step great-grandson; three sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Davis Kroening, infant grandson, Todd Kroening and many aunts and uncles.
A Memorial Service for Patricia will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Waid Funeral Home. The Rev. David Faulkner will officiate. Visitation will be held from 9 AM Saturday until the time of service also at the funeral home. Inurnment will take place on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 1 PM at St. Paul’s Cemetery in the town of Pine River. Rev. Greg Laska will perform the graveside service. Angela Detwiler
Angela Detwiler, 40, died on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at her home in Gleason, WI. She was born on November 11, 1975 to Bernice Dodson and received through adoption on May 28, 1980 to Glen and Priscilla Petre in Altamont, TN. They both survive.
Angela enjoyed story writing and also writing poetry. Her most recent poetic work was done shortly before her death. During her recovery from surgery she felt moved to write a children’s storybook focusing on adopted children finding security in Jesus. Angels’a cancer journey ended with deliverance and complete restoration in the arms of Jesus.

Angela is survived by her husband, Luke Detwiler, daughters: Luella, Drusilla, Aletha, Destany, Faith, and Rosetta, son: Melvin, parents: Glen and Priscilla Petre, sisters: Crystal (James) Nolt, Judith (Josiah) Kropf, brothers: Ethan (Janeva) Petre, Marlin (Emily) Petre, and Jalon Petre. She is preceded in death by her Biological mother: Bernice, Paternal Grandparents – Calvert (Ada) Petre and Maternal Grandmother – Corinne Martin.
A Funeral Service for Angela will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 10AM, in a large tent, at the Gleason Mennonite Church. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 30, 2016 from 2-4PM and again from 6-8PM, also at the Gleason Mennonite Church. Burial will immediately follow the service in the adjourning cemetery.

Laurice Schwartzman
Laurice Schwartzman, age 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at Pine Crest Nursing Home in Merrill. Laurice was born on July 6, 1934 to Arthur and Laura (Whitson) Severt. She attended the Merrill School system and graduated in 1952. On August 29, 1953 she married Thomas Schwartzman at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, a union lasting over 63 years. She and Tom were blessed with three children, Bruce, Kim and Laurel.
Laurice was an immaculate housekeeper and a fine cook – she and Tom hosted innumerable family get-togethers where no one ever walked away hungry. The Schwartzman household was a frequent destination for out of town guests. Music, card playing and good food were always on the agenda. Laurice was an accomplished organist and loved waltzes and polkas as well as hymns. Sing-alongs were almost required. She was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. Laurice took great pride in her children and showered them with unconditional love and understanding, even in the most difficult situations. She was a great listener and showed much patience and understanding. Tom and Laurice loved an occasional trip to the casinos which she enjoyed and was known to be quite lucky at times.
Survivors include her husband: Thomas Gene Schwartzman, Merrill; son; Bruce (Michelle) Schwartzman; daughter: Laurel (Kelly) Streich; daughter-in-law: Barb Schwartzman, all of Merrill; five grandchildren: Michelle Schwartzman, Ryan (Steph) Schwartzman, Erin (Chris) Swan, Christopher (Karen) Streich and Michelle (Andy) Geiss; seven great-grandchildren: Mitchel, Cooper Bradley, Renlee Eden, Wyatt Arthur, Matthew, Josilynn, Madilynn, Lucas and Michael; one brother: Terry Severt; and one sister-in-law: Betty Severt. Laurice was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Laura Severt, son, Kim Schwartzman, four brothers, Marlin (Darlene) Severt, Gordon Severt, Leroy (Birdie) Severt and Gene Severt, and a sister-in-law, Donald(Marlene) Woellner.
Funeral services for Laurice will be held at 11 AM, Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at Waid Funeral Home. The Rev. Missy Holdorf will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM Monday, October 3, 2016 and again from 10 AM until the time of service on Tuesday, all at the funeral home. Grace M. Barney
Grace M. Barney, age 88, of Merrill, passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2016, under the care of her loving family and the staff at Pine Crest Nursing Home, Merrill.
Grace was born August 16, 1928, in Antigo, daughter of the late Oscar and Isabelle (Lemmer) Hanson. She married David L. Barney, Sr. on February 18, 1950. He preceded her in death on July 30, 1992. Prior to her marriage, Grace worked at Merrill Candy Company and Coon’s Lodge. She served as a waitress all her married life. Grace had waitressed at the Badger Hotel, Riverside Club, Club 64, and Club Modern all in Merrill, the Town House in Wausau, and the Holiday Inn Supper Club in Minocqua. Grace enjoyed knitting and quilting for her family, and spending time at the family cabin up north.
Grace is survived by four daughters, Linda (James) Pierce, Tina (Bruce) Hipke, and Dixie Oberg, all of Merrill, and Michelle (Kevin) Kniess, Verona, WI; one son, David L. (Marcy) Barney, Jr., Merrill; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren, with one on the way; one sister, Patty Hopper, Merrill; one brother, Richard ‘Buddy’ (Loretta) Hanson, Gleason; and two sisters in law, Barbara Hanson, Merrill, and Patricia Hanson, Gleason.
Besides her husband and parents, Grace is preceded in death by her infant daughter, Gerri Lynn Barney; son in law, Steve Oberg; two sisters, Isabelle Chamberlin and Betty Lemke; two brothers, Ole Hanson and Oscar ‘Pinky’ Hanson; and three brothers in law, Ralph Hopper, LaVern Lemke, and Clarence Chamberlin.
A visitation for Grace will be held from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, October 5, 2016, at the Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill. Burial will take place at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Tomahawk. The Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, is assisting the family.

Oswald ‘Ozzie’ Rethaber
Oswald ‘Ozzie’ Rethaber, 84, of the Town of Pine River, Lincoln County, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2016 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
Ozzie was born August 5, 1932, in Cuero, Texas son of the late Mary Rethaber. He married Dionne ‘Mitzi’ Spears on April 16, 1955. He later married Darlene (Uttech) Doering on December 10, 1992. She survives. As a young man, Ozzie’s first job was filling silos for Wally Pilhoffer in the Gleason area. Ozzie enlisted with the United States Army during the Korean conflict and was stationed in Germany. After his honorable discharge, he returned home and worked for Carl Bolder on his potato farm. He then took a job at the former Atlas Plywood in Rhinelander. Ozzie eventually took a position with R.O.W./Hurd Millwork in the Merrill area. He retired from Hurd Millwork after more than 42 years. Ozzie also worked weekends as a logger with James Doering.
First and foremost, Ozzie enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed trout fishing with his fly rod; hunting with the “Doering Hunting Gang”; playing cards, especially Sheephead; and socializing with the neighborhood birthday club.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene Rethaber of the Town of Pine River; three daughters, Mary Weisshahn of Eau Claire, Cindy (Jim) Waldburger of Merrill and Brenda (Dell) Nicholson of Antigo; one son, Mark Rethaber of Gleason; one step-son, Dan (Laura) Doering of the Town of Pine River; 15 grandchildren, Cora, Becci, Shannon, Lindsey, Peter, Molly, Adam, Angel, Levi, Lani, Martin, Mindy, Matthew, Christina and Nicole; and 21 great-grandchildren. Ozzie was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Rethaber Flowers; his son-in-law, Bill Weisshahn; his daughter-in-law, Janet Rethaber; and his in-laws, Charlotte Spears and Edward and Stephanie Uttech.
The funeral service will be held at 12:00 P.M., Noon, Monday, October 3, 2016 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Town of Pine River. Pastor Greg Laska will officiate. Burial will take place in St. Paul’s Church Cemetery, Town of Pine River with graveside military rites conducted by V.F.W. Post 1638, Merrill. Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M. Willard ‘Willie’ Vertz
Willard ‘Willie’ Vertz, 75, of the Town of Pine River, Lincoln County, passed away Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Ministry Good Samaritan Health Center, Merrill.
Willie was born April 16, 1941 son of the late Walter and Kathryn (LaVassor) Vertz. He married Arlene M. Ponshock on January 21, 1984. She survives. Willie was a hard worker starting as a young boy: From working on the family farm to working many years at Brittenham Potato Farm as well as other potato farms to his last job of 23 years at Cequent Trailer Products in Mosinee ending in 2009. He was a member of St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ, Merrill.
Willie enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and feeding the deer and watching them in the backyard. He loved taking pontoon rides and taking the kids and grandkids waterskiing and tubing. He loved visiting with family and going on road trips. Willie was also an avid softball player, and he enjoyed umping the games. He was also involved in managing the women’s softball teams in which he led them to first place finishes. Willie enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. He especially enjoyed visiting Wrigley Field to cheer on the Cubs. Willie loved his cigars and campfires. He was a jokester and enjoyed making people laugh.
Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Arlene Vertz of Pine River; four daughters, Cindy Vertz of Merrill, Sue Vertz of Antigo, Janice (Brad) Graap of Merrill and Linda (Bryan) Yingling of Merrill; nine grandchildren, Kyle, Cyjay, Cassie, Rachel, Jesse, Devon, Miah, Hailey and Hunter; two great-grandchildren, Damian and Mariyea; five sisters, Edith Andersen of Antigo, Joanne (Dennis) Sutte of Polar, Sally Mueller of Le Sueur, Minnesota, Joyce Sense of Appleton and Sharon Short of Georgia; and three brothers, Delbert (Illa) Vertz of Antigo, Ervin Vertz of Polar and Dale (Cindy) Demmin of Denmark, WI; and one sister-in-law, Bonnie Vertz. Willie is also survived by his special friend, Rich Krause; Arlene’s siblings, David (Mary) Ponshock, Joanne (Walter) Sczygelski, Raymond (Kaye) Ponshock, Danny Ponshock, Mike Ponshock, Darlene (Dennis Jr.) Sutte, Debbie (Jay) Darling and Brian (Ron Carley) Ponshock; and many nieces and nephews. Willie was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Kathryn Vertz; two sisters, Charlotte Vertz and Carol Hintt; two brothers, Wally Vertz and Alfred Vertz; and two brothers-in-law, Robert Mueller and Sonny Andersen.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, October 8, 2016 at the Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill. Deacon Linda Schmidt will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Friday and after 12:00 P.M., Noon, Saturday all at the funeral home.
